En 1888 un inventor de Philadelphia creó una cera pastosa a base de dióxido de zinc con un ligero efecto antibacterial. El nombre de la marca se lo debemos a la enfermera del inventor, que tenía el mote de 'mum'.

Los primeros desodorantes que crearon fueron utilizado a modo de neutralizador del olor pero no solo en las axilas, sino también en los pies. Durante los años 20 su popularidad fue aumentando y la empresa comercializó el producto en latas metálicas y publicaron sus primeros anuncios publicitarios.
